What Manner of Thievery

The first time my phone was stolen or better put; the first time I was robbed of my phone was in 2010,which is definitely the last time, I was on my way home after work.

As part of his manifestos, Leboo was the one dropping me off after close of work everyday unless he was unavoidably absent. As we approached Ogudu express that night in a sun-kere, fa-kere typical Lagos traffic, a guy in a black hoodie suddenly appeared at his side of vehicle brandishing a gun and demanded for his phone. In this kind of situation, you don't "look at Uche's face" and he handed the phone over to him And then, my own phone was also requested for. I had two phones. A blackberry and a beautiful sleek red nokia.

The nokia was a birthday gift that had followed me from our sunshine state, relocated with me to Ibafo/Arepo, Ogun State and finally Ogba in Lagos State. It was my best friend so to speak.

And then (2x), I betrayed this friendship due to "wannabe-works-in-Lekki" influence. Who wouldn't want to "give me your bbmpin please". I handed my over the phone to Oga, while the BB was slid under my seat.

I promised myself that would be the last time my phone would be requested for and I kept to this.

While following up on an agreement recently with a company we wanted to signed on, I left my phone on a couch at the Mainoffice lounge and my brain clicked after 5minutes that I had misplaced my phone. I requested for the footage of visitors/staff that had gone through that path and I watched how my phone was being taken and kept away from wandering fingers.

It was a vendor who had come for payment. The footage was quite funny. He picked the phone, opened the pouch/casing and closed it. Returned the phone. Picked again. Returned it. He performed this act four times before keeping it finally inside his diary.

I called my lines severally and he refused to pick. A colleague called with office landline and he picked claiming that he actually took the phone to keep for the owner as he did not want it stolen.

"Brother?"

We have 3 receptions in the office. He actually met with someone. He knows some people in some department. Please do the maths of the stealing theory.

The phone was taken in the morning and returned in the afternoon because at this time, I had involved everyone "involveable" and some elements were saying "oh, he is not that kind of a person". A phone was taken from our Conservation office(near Chevron) all the way to Lekki just because brother is safeguarding my phone

Reminiscing...Missing some days

I miss the days
When we would sit round a bowl of hot eba and okro very early in the morning
I miss how my brother would use his teeth to divide beef while swallowing half while we sat there looking at him with every ounce of  annoyance in our bones
Oh! I miss the days

I miss the days
When eating chicken was luxury and rice was for special events and "Iya Teju" was good at making those puffy "red-made" christmas dresses for us
Oh! I miss the days

I miss the days
When we had to go to the farm early in the morning and looked forward to eating roasted corn or yam at the farm
The insects spared us not tho
Oh! I miss the days

I miss the days
When we had to learn a new word and its meaning everyday
Woe betide you if you are unable to use the words in sentences
Oh! I miss the days

I miss the days
When you sleep off while studying at night and dad would hide the books. Be ready for some jumping up if you were unable to provide an explanation of how your books disappeared while reading
Oh! I miss the days

I miss the days
When i knew all lyrics by heart and Tevin Campbell was our sweetheart. Dancing was also a favourite but lifting a leg is an hearculian task now
Oh! I miss the days

I miss the days
When growing up was eagerly awaited and we all wanted to be lawyers, doctors, bankers and always looking forward to the end of the year party
Oh! I miss the days

Growing up was fun. Moments of bad and good. Make every moment count. I miss the days

Speaking in Tongues

Back in Uni, I had gone to see a friend, also my course-mate. Just when I was about to leave her house, some brethren sauntered in. Pastor MM(not real name) as she was fondly called, welcomed them and introduced me to them

Then one of the brethren came to me and we went... hello, how are, which denomination do you attend speech.

Out of no where, brother asked if I speak in tongue. I told him no as there was no point in lying about it and I never considered it to be a thing of shame.

"Really"? brother asked! "You will speak in tongues before you leave Pastor MM house." He asked that we pray and till I speak in tongue, I would not go anywhere.

The prayers started. While brother was claabashing, I was praying who knows, could be that my redemption time had come.

Stylishly, while still praying I noticed it would soon be dark and this brother had stated earlier I would not leave till I speak in tongues. I continued the prayer while thoughts of how to escape the moment without being offensive.

At some point, I squeezed my eyes very tight and I started "a bra boo baa" session with all seriousness.

A soft tap in my hand, I opened my eyes and feigning ignorance in a very innocent way, Brother asked if I knew what just happened and I responded NO. In what seemed like Brother had just witnessed his fist live miracle, his face lit up and he shouted..."you just spoke in tongue, you just spoke in tongue". I went "OMG" on him and that was how I was able to get home on time. Which also reminded me of a story my sister told me about someone of same denomination that told her that for her to speak in tongue, she should string the vowels and consonants together.

This post is not to cast any aspersion on any denomination. However, I believe the gift of the spirit comes not from enforcement but truly from God and given to each of us in a special way

What is your Name?

At a Customer Relations and Marketing Developing Strategy Training recently, the facilitator commended the team lead of my case study group for introducing himself properly. And how was the introduction done: "My names are Shehu Chukwu(not real names). Facilitator went about how it is a plural verb arrangement. Then he further said that "my name is" is only correct when one introduces him/herself with the first name, as in(another topic for another day) "my name is Taiwo"
Using the subject-verb agreement basic rule, should it be "my names are Oludairo Taiwo or is it grammatically correct to say "my name is Taiwo Oludairo being that it refers to a particular individual/entity.
Going by the definition of what a name is, that is a word or set of words by which a person is known or addressed, i conclude by saying my name is Taiwo Oludairo.

WORKERS' DAY

Happy Workers Day folks!

My understanding of this significant day is a special day dedicated to workers in appreciation of their efforts both for the public or private workers.

A digression.. as i have been racking my brain thinking on what to write. So many things about the day but i keep deleting, typing and deleting. Could it be the frustration that i did not enjoy the day the way I had planned? Don't blame me...this is just rantings of someone made to come for a meeting on the day dedicated to her.

Days like this are usually one that all workers are enthusiatic about...but really???

Weird Life

I struggled with the title to give this story of mine...not not mine..., my friend actually.

Life to people connotes different things. We want to know who we are or even what we are most times. Many theories, ideologies and cultural backgrounds have been. But, the value of it is its achieved purpose.

Anyway, one of my perspectives to life is the reason for living and I can add, the essence of life.

Being philosophical is definitely out of it. However, some people's lifestyles could be a perfect guide for philosophers to have a specific understanding of LIFE....the likes of Pluto and Aristotle must have missed out on this discovery.

Well, according to my friend, she was on her way for an appointment with her boss when the car developed a fault. she said she had to board a bike to the place as she was running late. Getting there, the motorcyclist had no change...with her eagle eye, she spotted a shop and requested for a chilled bottle of Maltina.

She was savouring the chillness of her drink, if you have been inside Lagos sun for few minutes, savouring will definitely be an understatement, before I veer of, when a call came in just as she was about giving the seller his money.

My friend always get carried away when she is on the phone...so it was no different on this particular date

The man collected the money and told her to come inside the shop for her change, she finished the drink and stepped into the Shop for her change when she saw the fat old man oooohing and aaaahing.

A brief glance....the man was mastrubating, and boy! was he not enjoying it?

She said she did not wait to see what was down there before taking to her heels.

An old man, she referred to him. She called him sick, deranged and a could-be child rapist.

That is his life. That is the value he gets from living. Why? He did not mind if he was caught, it's part of him...doling out change in the aaahing and ooohing process..it's not an embarrassment to him. Something that gives you fulfillment is no embarrasment, doing that adds a kind of value to him.

My friend did not find it funny but hey! the man had discovered himself...

With the anti-gay law signed...baba needs to be discreet with his oohing & aahing#justsayin#

Life Choices

Life offers varied choices
Yet it gives limited chance
Many opportunities abound in it
But sometimes comes once
Itself, life is one
But lived as more
To make up for its limitless
and to explore its abundance
The life lived in:
Once or more
Can never be duplicated
How it is lived however,
Can never be duplicated
